Finding Wooden Jewelry Boxes in the Perfect Style for You

During the mid thirteenth century, jewelry boxes became popular in China, and before long they were exported all over the world. A jewelry box is the perfect way to store and display your fine jewelry, and with some of the designs and styles available, you can make a wooden jewelry box a decorative centerpiece for your dressing table. And you can find many selections of fine jewelry boxes at online retailers. One of the first things to think about before purchasing a wooden jewelry box is the color and style of wood that will best match the dressing table or bathroom counter top where the box will be displayed.

Hardwood is the term afforded to trees that lose their leaves in the winter and hardwoods are the most popular finishes on jewelry boxes, and each has a different look, feel and color. Popular hardwoods for furniture, cases and jewelry boxes are Oak, Cedar, Walnut, Chestnut, Ebony, Sandalwood, Mahogany, Cherry Wood and Teak. Boxes of Teak, Ebony and Cedar are popular choices for the Far East design, often featuring ornate Asian patterns and symbols.

The wood acts as a rich canvas for the lighter colors in the patterned designs. Oak, Walnut, Chestnut and Sandalwood are common choices for jewelry boxes designed in Colonial style, celebrating early 20th century American furniture design. These woods are popular in the mini armoire style display cases, as they reflect the same period as the furniture after which they are fashioned.

Mahogany and Cherry wood are often used in the design of turn of the century Edwardian style jewelry boxes, celebrating the decadent and high society rein of the British king, Edward VII. The design of the furniture and ornamental items from that period reflect the elegant social scene of the day.

Cedar wood boxes and dyed Chestnut might be used for antique style Victorian jewelry boxes, which are also very popular. As you can see, many designs are available, in rich woods and decadent veneers, with suede or felt lining to protect fine silver and gold. And each of these styles are available online, at various outlets. Jewelry cases, boxes, display towers and chests are an elegant addition to your dressing table, and you'll find a great selection of colors and styles to fit your own personal specifications.

When it comes to choosing the design of your wooden jewelry box, there are many options to consider. A mini jewelry armoire is simply fashioned after a full sized armoire. Often ornate in style, with glass fronted hinged doors and small draws for broaches and rings down the central column of the box, the mini armoire design is dainty and delicate, most often decorated in a colonial or Victorian style. Traditionally, these mini armoire boxes are finished in mahogany or cherry wood colors.

You will find that the wood finish is a major factor in the price of the piece, and there are less expensive alternatives, made from a standard wood, finished and dyed to look like the true wood. This is done with paint effects and colored dyes. An upright box is slender and sturdy, often built onto a rotating platform so you can access your jewelry from all four sides of the box.

The tall, upright design is perfect for displaying necklaces and bracelets that hang from small hooks. Again, often glass fronted, so your jewelry is proudly displayed, the upright style is also a good choice for a dressing table with limited space, or for a bathroom pedestal with no room for a standard case.

Wood Jewelry Boxes - Handmade Jewelry Boxes for Both Men and Women

Handmade wood jewelry boxes can be used by either a man or woman, and can be configured for needs now and in the future. Each box is not only functional, but a treasured work of art. Many people assume that jewelry boxes are only for women. Wood jewelry boxes certainly are unique gifts for women, but they can also be a unique unusual gift for men.

Women have always loved to store everything from their costume jewelry to their heirloom treasures in beautiful boxes. However, the man in your life can also use a men's jewelry box to store his things as well. A jewellery box helps organize the contents, so that each piece can be easily reached. Most handmade wood jewelry boxes have dividers in them, and many times those dividers can be changed to personalize your box even more. Dividers really help small earring posts from getting lost.

These small sections also work wonderfully for men's tie tacks, cuff links, money clips, and more. The dividers can also be totally removed so that you can lay your collections out, or keep them in the original box they came in. Pearls and beaded jewelry are more easily broken, so one or more drawers have longer slots to lay the more fragile pieces down in the box and keep them separated. Some jewelry storage boxes are made with hanging necklace holders.

They protect the jewelry from getting tangled, and keep each necklace visible and ready to grab. Most have trays at the bottom to catch any pendants that are especially long. Men are starting to wear necklaces more than ever before, so necklace holders work for them also. However, many styles of wooden boxes are built so all of your jewelry lays flat.

Boxes can come with different levels within one box, or with numerous drawers to organize your jewelry or keepsakes. Watches have become one of the hottest jewelry statements for both men and women. Many wood jewelry boxes are being made now for strictly watches, complete with watch pillows. Of course, if you don't need an entire watch box just for watches, the drawers can be set up to be dedicated watch drawers within your box.

Imagination and organization are your only limit, and your handcrafted wooden box can always be rearranged for future needs. Whether you are choosing wood jewelry boxes for a man or woman, you would like it to be of the highest quality and craftsmanship. A handmade jewelry box is not only functional, but a work of art that you use every day.

Many times they are made out of exotic hardwoods, artistically mixed together with burls, to compliment and make each one even more beautiful. Burls are beautiful accent woods, known to most people as the 'warts' growing on the sides or in the root system of the tree. Many people think burls look like granite or stone the first time they see it; the natural swirls create beautiful patterns and no two pieces are ever alike.

Some of the most essential resources that I use all the time are: wood (I usually use cherry, oak, cedar or mahogany, these types of woods are apt to provide me enhanced looking boxes),screws or nails (my individual liking is to dove tail the boxes but I do make use of finishing nails a lot as well),wood glue, a spray adhesive, a saw ( I try to use a jig saw, band saw and a chop saw), sand paper/ sander(I use a fine grit and rough grit) u can use a hand saw if this is all that you have access to), hammer, two small hinges, measuring tape, utility knife and a pencil or pen.

Also you are going to want to pick out an interior material. This can be anything from felt, silk, velvet, leather or just left as plain wood, it is all just personal preference. With any of the materials that you use make sure that you can easily bend and manipulate the material into the nooks and crannies of the wooden jewelry box.
